Organisation description
RISE Living Safe (RISE) is a specialist family violence organisation and charitable NGO. We serve communities across Te Tau Ihu - Nelson, Tasman, West Coast, Marlborough and Kaikōura regions and have offices in Nelson (HQ) and Motueka. For nearly 40 years, RISE has helped individuals and families seek and achieve real change to live healthier and safer lives. We work with people who use violence as well as people who experience it and we seek to inspire them to make lifelong changes for themselves and their whānau.
Our extensive team of specialist family violence clinicians, social workers and administrators oversee multiple programmes and services that are delivered locally and nationally. RISE holds contracts with key central government ministries and is accredited and approved by the Ministry of Social Development, Oranga Tamariki, the Ministry of Justice, and the Department of Corrections. We are a member of a national network of organisations that provide family violence services.
As a Charitable Trust established in 1993 under the Charitable Trust Act (1957), RISE is governed by its Board of Trustees. Each brings expertise, experience, and a commitment to ensure RISE continues to act in accordance with its mission and vision. Please read more about RISE on our website.
Particular skills/competencies sought
The organisation continues to be in a period of change; we have recently employed a new chief executive officer/kaiwhakahaere and we have started year two of a five-year strategic plan. We are experiencing challenges in line with other organisations around Aotearoa/New Zealand that affect ongoing funding, resources, and our ability to fully meet the needs of people in our communities.
However, RISE has a strong reputation for excellence in our people, our services, and delivering on our outcomes. The Board is taking an active role in mitigating risks ahead. That is why we are looking for a Trustee with current governance experience who would like to contribute to making a true difference to an organisation entering a new phase.
Ideal applicants will have
- previous or current experience in governance roles
- hold high standards of ethics, independence and stewardship
- have the ability to govern to a Strategic Plan
- tautoko our commitment to upholding the mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- bring cultural intelligence and an awareness of te aō Māori.
We are always interested in candidates from diverse backgrounds including lived experience of family harm and/or having participated in family harm programmes.
RISE follows the Good-Governance-Code-Waehere-Whakahaere-Tika, a set of six principles that define good governance for community organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Commitment required
The Board meets monthly for at least two hours, usually from February through December, and holds an Annual General Meeting. Monthly meetings alternate between official business and strategic plan implementation work; some business meetings are held online.
There are occasional other workshops, meetings, or attendance at RISE events as required. The Board also meets at least annually for a strategic planning workshop. Trustees are undertaking mahi to become a more Tiriti-led Board and a few additional meetings are held annually for this purpose. Trustees are also active members of the Institute of Directors local chapter and attend relevant functions.
Trustees are provided a fixed monthly stipend for meeting time and out-of-meeting contributions as well as a paid IoD membership and ongoing governance training support.
Term
The Board is comprised of no less than 4 and no more than 8 Trustees. Trustees serve a three-year term that can be renewed up to three times.
Geographical considerations
Trustees are to be based in the regions RISE serves, which are Te Tau Ihu, Te Tai Poutini, and Kaikōura. For applicants based outside of the Nelson/Richmond area but within the other regions RISE serves, a commitment to in-person meetings is necessary.
