Lead Council's insurance programme and help protect the services, assets and infrastructure that support Wellington's communities.
We're looking for an experienced and strategic Principal Advisor Insurance to deliver Wellington City Council's insurance programme and provide trusted specialist advice across the organisation.
As Council's insurance subject matter expert, this role leads the delivery of the insurance roadmap, oversees insurance cover and claims and provides practical, risk-based advice that supports informed decision-making. Working closely with business units, senior leaders and our external insurance broker, you'll help ensure Council's assets, services and operations are appropriately protected. This is a fixed-term opportunity until April 2027.
Āu ake mahi - What you'll do
Lead the ongoing management and continuous improvement of Council's insurance programme, ensuring insurance arrangements remain fit for purpose and aligned with organisational needs. Provide strategic advice on insurance, risk transfer and indemnity requirements, support contract negotiations, and maintain strong relationships with insurers, brokers and industry specialists.
Oversee insurance renewals, claims reporting and insurance-related advice across the Council. Through analysis and stakeholder engagement, identify opportunities to improve processes, minimise risk and deliver positive outcomes for Council.
As a trusted advisor, work collaboratively across teams and influence decision-making by providing clear, evidence-based advice that supports Council's strategic objectives.
Ngā tohu me ngā wheako - Qualifications and experience
We're seeking an experienced insurance professional with strong technical expertise, commercial acumen and the ability to build effective relationships across a complex organisation.
A Bachelor of Commerce or a related qualification and/or at least five years' experience in a similar role will be complemented by relevant insurance industry experience, strong analytical skills and a proven ability to provide strategic advice and influence decision-making.
Success in this role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex insurance matters into practical business advice. You'll demonstrate sound judgement, professionalism and discretion when managing sensitive information, along with a track record of delivering results, managing competing priorities and driving continuous improvement.
Most importantly, you'll be a trusted advisor who enjoys solving problems, building partnerships and helping Council make informed decisions that support Wellington's future.
