Kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō - Working together for Wellington's future

Help shape public trust through transparency, integrity and accountability.

At Wellington City Council, we're committed to delivering democratic services that support an open, transparent and trusted local government. Our Official Information team plays a critical role in ensuring Council meets its legislative obligations while helping build confidence in the decisions we make and the services we deliver.

We're looking for experienced and confident Advisors or Senior Advisors, Official Information to join our team. We have flexibility to appoint at either level, depending on the skills, knowledge and experience of the successful candidate. This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex and high-risk official information, and privacy matters, while influencing organisation-wide improvements in transparency, customer experience and good governance.

Āu ake mahi - What you'll do

As an Advisor or Senior Advisor, Official Information, you will play a key role in ensuring Council meet its obligations under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA) and the Privacy Act 2020, helping to maintain public trust and confidence in Council.

Depending on your experience and level, you will manage a range of official information requests, privacy matters and Ombudsman queries, from straightforward to complex and high-risk cases. Working closely with teams across Council you will strengthen processes, manage risk, and improve information management practices.

In this varied position, you will respond to requests for information, provide advice and guidance to stakeholders across the organisation, and support enquiries from the Office of the Ombudsman and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

You will identify potential risks and issues, provide practical and balanced advice, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen processes, enhance customer outcomes and support transparency across Council. Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders will be essential to achieving positive outcomes and fostering confidence in our services and decision-making.

For candidates appointed at the Senior Advisor level, there will be additional responsibility for leading complex and high-risk matters, providing expert advice to senior leaders, mentoring colleagues and influencing Council wide improvements to official information, privacy and complaints management practices.

Ngā tohu me ngā wheako - Qualifications and experience

You'll be a skilled advisor with experience navigating complex and sensitive issues, providing sound judgement, and building trusted relationships across an organisation. Experience managing official information requests, privacy matters, investigations or complaints, ideally within a public sector or regulatory environment, will be complemented by a strong understanding of LGOIMA, the Privacy Act 2020, and administrative decision-making principles.

Strong analytical, investigative and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to prepare clear, well-reasoned advice and responses under tight timeframes. Politically savvy and solutions-focused, you'll be comfortable managing competing priorities, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, and identifying opportunities to improve processes, compliance and customer outcomes.

For appointment at the Senior Advisor level, you'll bring demonstrated experience managing complex and high-risk matters, providing strategic advice to senior leaders, and influencing organisational practice through leadership, coaching and expert guidance.
