Māori Women’s Development Inc (MWDI) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting wāhine Māori and their whānau in business, and we’re looking for someone to join our team!
This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a charitable organisation which is a unique and indigenous organisation. It is governed, managed and operated by Wāhine Māori to encourage the economic development of wāhine Māori and their whānau to ensure that Māori share in and contribute equitably to our nation’s cultural, economic, social and political achievements through its business programmes and services.
Māori Women’s Development Inc is an organisation with a whakapapa. In 1951, Te Ropu Wahine Maori Toko i te Ora (MWWL) was established to promote activities that would improve the position of Māori with a particular focus on women and children.
In 1987, Maori Womens Welfare League recognising the economic disparities and financial barriers for Māori women established the Māori Women’s Development Fund to assist wāhine Māori into business. In 1997, Māori Women’s Development Incorporated was registered and received Charitable Status in August 2012.
The Trustees of MWDI are the past and present Presidents of the Maori Womens Welfare League. The membership of MWDI comprises the Trustees and the National Council of Maori Womens Welfare League.

About the role
The Communications Advisor is responsible for coordinating and implementing the MWDI Communications Strategy, ensuring the protection, enhancement, and development of MWDI’s brand and reputation in alignment with the organisation’s vision, mission, and the needs and expectations of our clients.
The role plays a key part in strengthening MWDI’s organisational reputation through effective internal and external communications with stakeholders, industry partners, community, clients, and employees.
This is a permanent part-time role based in the Wellington CBD.
The key successes in this role and ideal applicant would be able to:
- Effectively implement the MWDI Communications Strategy.
- Maintain quality and consistency of communications advice across the organisation.
- Assist the MWDI Kaiwhakahaere and wider team with copy writing and proof reading for all MWDI programs and services, letter writing and submissions.
- Draft communications on behalf of the MWDI Kaiwhakahaere, and prepare and finalise operational reports to a high standard.
- Prepare and publish the monthly MWDI e-Pā
- Manage the MWDI social media platforms, produce and publish weekly content.
The following background is preferred:
- Understanding of both the English language (including grammar), and Te Reo Māori me ngā tikanga is essential.
- Excellent communication and client facing skills – essential.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills – essential.
- Solid organisational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills – essential.
- Intermediate to Advanced Word skills.
- Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills (not essential).
- Previous experience in
- Good understanding of key social media platforms and producing content.
- Must be a team player, a pleasant and enthusiastic personality.
- Manaakitanga for our Māreikura, Kahurangi hoki and all manuhiri is essential.
- Full and clean NZ driver’s license.
This role is a permanent part-time position based in Wellington. The pro-rated salary for the role will be dependent on applicant’s experience and skills. Criminal conviction and reference checks will be required.
