Two Board Member Vacancies

Hato Hone St John

  • Flexible

Hato Hone St John seeks two exceptional governance professionals to join our Board as we continue our 140-year commitment to enhancing health and wellbeing for all New Zealanders.  These roles have strategic oversight and influence for a $550M annual expenditure organisation with 3,700 paid staff and 8,000 volunteers.  As one of New Zealand’s most trusted charities, benefitting almost every community, our board members make a significant impact across Aotearoa.

About the Role

As a Board Member, you'll provide governance oversight, working alongside the Chancellor and fellow board members to ensure strategic direction, financial sustainability, and excellence in emergency care and community health services.

We currently have two Board positions available:

Position One:  Governance expertise with strong te ao Māori focus.  You will bring deep understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and established connections within Māori communities to help advance our Te Aka strategy and equity commitments.

Position Two:  Governance expertise with a digital and technology focus.  You will bring strategic insight into digital transformation, AI developments, cybersecurity, and data security to guide our evolution as a connected health service provider.

What We're Looking For

For both roles we need real team players who can constructively challenge and build consensus.
You will need proven governance experience alongside the ability to think strategically across New Zealand-wide operations.  Exceptional integrity and commitment to our values is essential.  An understanding of the NZ health and/or emergency services system such as healthcare strategy, health sector service delivery and government policy would be beneficial, but not essential.

For the te ao Māori-focused position:

  • Established networks within Māori communities
  • Deep understanding of tikanga and mātauranga Māori
  • Experience advancing equity for Māori in governance settings

For the digital and technology-focused position:

  • Strategic understanding of digital transformation and AI
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and data security governance
  • Intellectual capacity to guide rapid technological change
  • Understanding of the volunteer environment

The Commitment

This is a voluntary position and requires a significant time commitment with 11 meetings a year (mix of online and in person) as well as sub committees and strategic planning commitments.  Appointments are for three years, with possibility of reappointment for an additional three-year term.  Detailed information on dates and time commitment can be found in our candidate information pack.

Our Values

We're guided by our whakaaro nui (open minds), mahi tika (right thing), whakapai ake (make it better), piritahi (side by side), and mahi pono (straight up).
