The Sociology, Gender Studies, and Criminology programme is a vibrant, multidisciplinary unit, forming the largest academic group in the School of Social Sciences, Division of Humanities at the University of Otago. Our Criminology programme has a critical criminology focus that we are looking to expand. To build on our success, we are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to join our team in mid 2026. This is a full-time, permanent position.

The role - Te mahi
We welcome applications from candidates with a demonstrated focus in criminology and/or criminal justice. The successful candidate will teach within the Criminology curriculum and contribute to the wider programme. On commencement, the candidate will be expected to contribute to introductory and core criminological theory papers. In time, the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate courses aligned with their area of expertise.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active programme of research and publication. To support the strong postgraduate research culture within the Programme, they will supervise postgraduate dissertations and theses. In addition, the candidate will contribute service to the Programme, School, University, and wider communities.
Your skills and experience - Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong disciplinary grounding in Criminology, with the capacity for high-quality teaching, research, and service. They will have:
- A doctoral degree in Criminology or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated strong record of research publications in criminology.
- Demonstrated experience and ability in delivering high-quality teaching.
- Ability to contribute to the development and growth of the Criminology major.
- Demonstrated experience with postgraduate supervision and/or mentorship.
- Willingness to support the other disciplines in the programme, Sociology and Gender Studies, through occasional teaching and supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
- Commitment to upholding the University's core values related to support and success of Māori and Pacific students, aligned with the University's Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework.

This is a full-time (1 FTE) permanent position, based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The appointment range for this role is $94,084 to $111,056 per annum.
