The role of Te Pane Matua Taiao; Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is to protect our environment while meeting the cultural, social and economic needs of our communities.  They’re specifically responsible for the region’s natural environment; including flood protection, biosecurity, provision of regional parks, public transport planning and funding, and partnering for climate change resilience.

Within the council, Te Hunga Whiriwhiri rōpū embrace their privileged role upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the values of the partnership between GWRC and mana whenua in the region. They provide support and advice on governance relationships, strategic and operational leadership, policy and planning which unlocks the potential of Māori communities, effective communication and engagement with Māori and leadership on te reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role:

The Ringa Āwhina is the ‘glue’ and plays a pivotal role in providing support to Te Pou Whakarae and their Senior Leadership team, prioritising their work programme objectives and ensuring seamless operations. This dynamic role involves skillfully managing calendars, inboxes, and communications, anticipating needs, and offering effective solutions with precision. Utilising expertise in technology systems such as SharePoint, Teams and Powerpoint, you will mentor others and develop efficient processes. Liaising with the Kaiwhakahaere Matua Tutukinga to track and monitor outcomes and drafting official correspondence will be integral to facilitating effective communication within the team.

This is a busy role within a hardworking team where you’ll work collaboratively with other Ringa Āwhina and manage multiple demands, but fun is also important, and collegiality is valued. The ability to prioritise and bravery to have the conversations to support this will be encouraged.

Mōu | About You:

You’ll have a high degree of integrity and discretion, the ability to build and maintain relationships, superb time management skills and the ability to cope with complex, fast moving and changing situations. Proficiency in te ao Māori is crucial for this role as is proven experience in an executive assistant role, ideally at a senior level. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must, as you'll need to build trust and credibility at the executive level. Experience in financial and budget management is desired and a strong technological aptitude and willingness to learn new systems are important; experience in project management coordination would be advantageous for this position.
