Te Whānau O Waipareira’s Wai Research unit is looking for a passionate and experienced researcher to be part of our community research team. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in research and evaluation, and be immersed in kaupapa Māori research and evaluation approaches, as well as be knowledgeable in tikanga Māori and Reo.

Furthermore, this role is for someone who has a proven track-record of best-practice research, and a real desire to effect positive changes for our local and national communities. The ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary and diverse team that functions across a range of platforms is a necessity, as is the ability to be self-directed where needed.

The position is a full-time, permanent appointment, and offers a real opportunity to the right person to develop as a researcher, while being exposed to a stimulating and innovative environment.

As part of the project team the researcher will:

  • Scope projects and develop methodology, approaches and research/evaluation tools
  • Undertake ethics proposal requirements
  • Engage relevant project stakeholders; including working groups, advisory groups and others as required
  • Collect data as per outlined methodology, including – but not limited to – face-to face interviews, focus groups, surveys etc.
  • Conduct reviews of literature where required
  • Conduct data analysis
  • Write up research and evaluation findings in reports; publications and other medium as required
  • Be part of designing and implementing dissemination plans
  • Present on data findings as required
  • Participate in funding and contracting proposal writing
  • Maintain accurate project records
  • Manage and respond to project related email and correspondence
  • Attend project meetings, research group meetings and other meetings and events as required
  • Represent Wai Research/Te Whānau O Waipareira when required for advice and support across community projects relevant to research and evaluation
  • Be accountable as part of the overall research team on ensuring ethics and protection of Māori whānau stakeholders at all times

Position requirements

  • Minimum post-graduate qualification in relevant field
  • Experience of working in Māori research/evaluation
  • Experience of working with and for Māori communities
  • Knowledge of te reo me ona tikanga
  • Excellent understanding of kaupapa Māori research methods
  • Excellent understanding of Māori health issues
  • Experience in gathering and analysing data
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage time and work to deadlines
  • Experience in administrating data
  • Computer skills including word processing, database and spreadsheet familiarity, and some knowledge of qualitative software
  • Ability to be flexible around working hours
  • A desire to learn on the job and work independently
